The tremendous success Bentley enjoyed with the R Type Continental continued onto the S Series chassis in late 1955 with a range of new bodies available to collectors. The Park Ward fixed head coupe was originally the brain child of legendary coachwork designer John Blatchley who had been largely responsible for the styling of the R Type Continental by H.J. Mulliner. Six R Type Continental chassis were delivered to the Park Ward works who were then owned by Rolls-Royce. Blatchley was given the task of styling the four drophead coupes and the two further fixed head coupes on the R Type Continental chassis, a design which was later slightly adapted for the marginally longer S1 Continental chassis. Chassis No BC30BG is one of just forty five examples built by Park Ward to Design No 701 in right hand drive on the S1 Continental chassis. It was originally completed in September of 1956, finished in shell grey with a red leather interior. It was then supplied to its first owner, Mr P.J. Tailby of Derbyshire. It was then owned by the following people, P.Fyne and Co Ltd of Birmingham in 1958, Mrs H.T. Morton of Swindon again in 1958, Mr A Cowley of London in 1961, Castell Locks Ltd of London again in 1961 and R.M.O. Havers of Newmarket in 1964. Chassis No BC30BG then found its way to Continental Europe and was then acquired by Frank Dale & Stepsons in recent times. Since acquisition the car has been prepared to showroom condition. A full mechanical review took place, the interior leather was sympathetically restored, new carpets were trimmed and fitted and the interior woodwork was also restored. The chrome was largely re-plated and the coachwork was restored in silver over black with a red coachline. The finished result is a beautiful and striking motor car that is a pleasure to drive. Chassis No BC30BG is fitted with the later, arguably more attractive rear light configuration, with slightly smaller rear fins. It also benefits from the S1 Continental mechanical upgrades in the form of power steering, the larger 8:1 compression carburettors and the dual braking system, all of which were original fittings from the factory. Chassis No BC30BG is also fitted with the more attractive smaller rear windshield, with larger C posts, giving the motor car a more balanced side profile and overall appearance than the later wrap around rear window variants. It is complete with tools, handbook, copy chassis cards and all of the documents relating to the works carried out in recent times.
